Roommate rent-split calculator
Put a proposed split on the table. Compare equal shares with a simple model that gives each roommate their private-room area plus an equal part of the common area.
Free, no login. Inputs stay in memory in this tab; nothing is saved or sent.
This is a negotiation aid, not an objectively fair rent. Room quality, noise, accessibility and personal preferences are not measured.
Worked example: PLN 3,000.00 divided between two roommates.
Proposed rent shares
Private area + equal common area. Common area: 30 m².
Total rent: PLN 3,000.00 per agreed period.
| Alias | Weight | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Alex | 35 m² | PLN 1,750.00 |
| Sam | 25 m² | PLN 1,250.00 |
Shares always add up to the entered rent. Whole cents use the largest remainders; ties follow participant order. Displayed weights and percentages may be rounded.

How to split rent by room size
First agree on which spaces are private and which are shared. Count the shared space once. With two roommates, rooms of 20 and 10 m² and 30 m² of common area produce weights of 35 and 25 m²: each roommate receives 15 m² of common area. The total weight is 60 m². For rent of 3,000, the proposed shares are 3,000 × 35 ÷ 60 = 1,750 and 3,000 × 25 ÷ 60 = 1,250.
When equal shares make more sense
Equal shares divide the same rent by the participant count, ignoring areas. For the example above, each person pays 1,500. Compare both models and discuss the differences before agreeing. This calculator does not recommend market rent, allocate legal obligations or transfer payments.
Measure every area in either square metres or square feet. Do not mix the two or enter linear lengths as areas. No conversion is performed. Room areas must be above zero; common area may be zero. Use up to four decimal places for areas and two for rent.
